The Stand

King’s 1978 horror, The Stand, depicts a post-apocalyptic world where 99% of the population has been wiped out. The remaining survivors have to choose sides between good and evil. It all leads to the last stand.

Salem’s Lot

This was the follow-up to King’s first novel Carrie and proved he was not just a one-hit wonder. It tells the story of Ben, a writer who returns to his hometown. When he arrives,  he discovers that vampires have taken up residence there.

The Shining

Jack Torrance is a writer and recovering alcoholic who is working as a caretaker in the Overlook hotel. He becomes trapped there with his wife and psychic son Danny, who can see the atrocities of the past that took place in the hotel. Then Jack’s sanity begins to slip away as the mysterious forces surrounding the hotel begin to take control.

The Green Mile

This 1996 serial novel focuses on a stretch of prison cells known as The Green Mile. A place where psychotic inmates await their turn in the electric chair. It tells the story of supervisor Paul Edgecombe and his relationship with the prisoner John Coffey, who displays superhuman abilities.

IT

Originally published in 1986, it tells the story of a group of children terrorized by Pennywise, a clown who feeds on their fear. The group set about fighting off the demonic clown. 30 years later, Pennywise returns and the terror begins once more. The group must come together again as adults and encounter the evil clown for a second time.

Misery

Writer Paul Sheldon finally meets his biggest fan Annie Wilkes, who tends to him after a car accident. Unfortunately, Annie is a psychopath and keeps him captive in her house. Then she learns that her favorite character, Misery, has been killed off in Sheldon’s latest book.  Annie demands he write a new book to bring the character back.

Carrie

Carrie is King’s first published novel. Released in 1974, it tells the story of a bullied high school student who discovers she has telekinetic powers. Carrie sets about getting revenge on her tormentors and so begins the horror and devastation.

The Body

King’s coming of age book tells the story of Gordie and a group of friends who set out on a journey to find the body of Ray Browner, a boy who has disappeared and is presumed dead. It’s told in the first person by the narrator, Gordie, who is the remaining survivor of the group. The book was later adapted into the classic movie Stand by Me.

The Shawshank Redemption

Andy Dufresne receives a double life sentence after being convicted of the murder of his wife and her lover, despite evidence to suggest otherwise. The message “hope springs eternal” runs throughout the whole book. When everything else is against you, there is still hope.

The Dead Zone

This science-fiction thriller tells the story of Jonny Smith, who spends four and a half years in a coma following an injury sustained in an accident. When he wakes up, he has the power to read a person and see the future when he touches them. This is due to a “dead zone”, an area of the brain that has sustained permanent damage.
